Textural Layering for a Warm and Cosy Home

Dining room, industrial shelves filled with glass jars and ceramic plates, large hanging pendant, oak dining table, captain chairs and bench,

We have officially entered winter in New Zealand. The days and nights are cooler and rainier, and in some parts of the country, it's beginning to snow. As a self-professed homebody, I love the cooler months when I can relax and luxuriate in my obsession with cosy layers. When I think of ‘winter layering’, I’m not just referring to textiles - like cushions, throws and blankets. Layering also encompasses the objects that give a space visual warmth, weight and depth, specifically, texture.

Layering textures in various forms - everything from soft furnishing, decor to wall surfaces is key to creating a home that oozes warmth and cosiness during the colder months. Here are a few of my favourite types of textures to add to your spaces this winter:

Wool

Oak bench with wool rug, hanging linen pendant over oak dining table, large round mirror on wall

What is winter without some kind of woollen soft furnishing? Wool blankets, throws, cushions, and rugs add an element of warmth to a space that just oozes ‘cosy’. I love layering wool rugs over occasional chairs and benches which I find softens the look of them (also sooo comfortable to sit on). Woollen blankets and throws draped over wooden dining chairs also makes sparse corners look more inviting.

Fabric Lighting

Textural layers aren’t just restricted to cushions and throws, textile lighting is a great way to add a surprise element to a space. My favourite type of textile lighting are linen hanging pendants - extra large and dramatic! Linen lampshades are also a great option for a more subtle texture.

Ceramic

Leach Studio Ceramic, Round Vase and Dried Flowers

The more handmade and sculptural, the better! Ceramics add not only texture but visual weight to a space, especially voluminous, rounded pieces. Curves have a ‘warmth’ of their own and when added to interior styling, draw the eye and heighten the sense of cosiness.

Wall Panelling

Board and Batten Hallway, Himalayan Salt Porters Paint

Tongue and groove, board and batten, wall moulding, wallpaper, and even textured paint are all excellent ways to add a sense of depth and texture to any room.

Winter is all about imbuing your home with warmth and comfort, and what better way than with textural layers. Click here for more home styling tips.
